Cleanings, Exams, and X-Rays Howell, NJ
If you are a brand-new parent, life is filled with magical firsts. Your heart melts at that first smile.
You listen closely for the first word. Those wobbly first steps become treasured memories.
There’s another important first that deserves just as much excitement—your child’s first visit to the dentist.
At Howell Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Karan and our team create a happy, welcoming space where children feel safe, relaxed, and even excited about caring for their smile.
Your child’s first dental visit helps build strong, healthy habits and sets the stage for a lifetime of bright, confident smiles.

What You Need to Know About Your Child’s First Exam, as well as Digital X-Rays
If this is your first child, it’s completely normal to have questions, and our team at Howell Pediatric Dentistry is here to help you feel comfortable, informed, and confident every step of the way.
Most children should visit the dentist by their first birthday or when the first tooth appears, and during this visit, Dr. Karan will gently perform a “smile check,” examining your child’s teeth and gums to ensure everything is developing properly.
To make the visit positive and enjoyable, talk with your child about it in a casual, reassuring way, avoiding words that might sound scary, like “needle,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.”
Dr. Karan and our team communicate in a friendly, non-threatening way, helping your child stay calm and comfortable. We’ll also cover teething, brushing tips, and healthy habits, and there’s always time for questions.
In some cases, we may recommend digital dental x-rays, which use only a very small amount of radiation, are fast and comfortable, and help us see important details that aren’t visible during an exam.
Your child’s first dental visit is an important step toward building healthy habits early and creating a lifetime of bright, confident smiles. We love helping children feel safe, relaxed, and even excited about caring for their teeth.
Why We Take X-Rays
Digital X- Rays help us see all the little things we can’t catch during a simple smile check. They give us a closer look beneath the surface, so we can understand how your child’s teeth and jaw are growing and developing.
These images help us find small concerns early—like tiny cavities between teeth, changes in development, or spacing as new teeth come in.
We like to think of it as creating a “smile map” that lets us follow your child’s growth and make sure everything is right on track.
Catching things early often means easier, more comfortable care—and lots more reasons to keep smiling.
Your child’s first visit is a special step toward a lifetime of healthy habits and happy dental experiences. At Howell Pediatric Dentistry in Howell, NJ, we are committed to helping every child feel proud of their strong, sparkling smile.
