Does My Child Need a Root Canal?

If this tissue becomes damaged or infected, your child may experience discomfort or sensitivity. During a gentle, thorough exam, Dr. Karan will determine whether a root canal is needed. Contrary to common myths, a root canal is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. Some of the most common reasons a child may need a root canal include: • Deep tooth decay • Injury or trauma to the tooth • A fracture that exposes the pulp to bacteria Whenever possible, we try to save your child’s permanent teeth with a root canal rather than extraction. What to Expect During a Root Canal
There are two types of root canal treatment for children: pulpotomy, which removes part of the pulp, and pulpectomy, which removes all of it. Both procedures are performed gently and carefully to make your child as comfortable as possible. Most root canals take two visits. During the first visit, we access the pulp and remove any damaged tissue. The canals are cleaned and shaped, then filled with a safe, rubber-like material called gutta-percha to prevent further infection. Afterward, the tooth may need a crown to strengthen and protect it. For baby teeth, we often use stainless steel crowns, which are durable and long-lasting. Permanent teeth are usually capped with tooth-colored porcelain crowns for a natural look.
After the Procedure
We use kid-friendly comfort sedation to help your child feel relaxed and at ease during the procedure. Once the numbness wears off, there may be some mild discomfort, but it usually passes quickly. With gentle home care and regular dental checkups, a permanent tooth treated with a root canal can last a lifetime.
