The purpose of the first visit is to build a trusting relationship with your child while laying the groundwork for a lifetime of excellent oral health. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child has his/her first visit by their first birthday.

At this appointment, Dr. Karan and staff will get to know your child. Along with a comprehensive examination and cleaning, we will discuss brushing techniques, flossing, fluoride recommendations, habits and nutritional counseling. All steps will be thoroughly explained in child-friendly terms. At this time, any questions that you or your child may have will be answered.

As a parent, you can help make your child’s first visit to the dentist positive and enjoyable. Be sure to inform your child of the purpose of the visit in a casual way. Avoid using words that cause fear such as “needle,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.” My staff and I will communicate with your child in a non-threatening way, helping to keep your child calm and comfortable.

At Howell Pediatric Dentistry, you as a parent are always welcomed to accompany your child to the treatment room especially on the first visit unless you choose to do otherwise. However, we do ask that multiple family members not accompany the child because this can often be a source of distraction.
